Our electronic edition of some 100 medieval Welsh-language texts will comprise poems, prose lives and genealogies. They will be presented with full introductions, notes and English translations: transcriptions of variant versions will be published in full, and there will be high quality digital images of many of the manuscripts.
The edition – which will be accessed through this website – will be launched in Spring 2017. In the meantime, the range of texts that we are tackling is described in greater detail below, and there are some examples in draft form (with texts and translations, but not yet with notes and introduction). Parts of our work will also appear in complementary paper publications. Two of these are already available:
Jane Cartwright, Mary Magdalene & Her Sister Martha: an edition and translation the medieval Welsh lives (Washington D.C.: Catholic University of America, 2013)
Barry J. Lewis, Medieval Welsh Poems to Saints and Shrines (Dublin: Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, 2015)
There are over 30 Welsh prose lives of saints, over half of which are unpublished. One reason for this is evident: almost all the unpublished lives deal with international or universal saints, and scholarship has passed them over as being of less interest than native Welsh figures … to be continued …
